About this scholarship
Description/Applicant information
This Curtin top up scholarship supports high-achieving Vietnamese candidates to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Curtin University, Perth Western Australia. Project 89 is a Vietnam Government training scheme under Ministry of Education & Training (MoET) in Vietnam, through its Vietnam International Education Development (VIED) office and was launched in January 2019. Project 89 will be operational until 2030 with the purpose of enhancing competencies of lecturers and administrators of Higher Education institutions.

The scholarship will be jointly funded by Curtin University and the Vietnamese Government under Project 89.
The Vietnamese Government will provide for onshore study in Australia:

Tuition fee scholarship support up to a maximum USD $25,000 per year for 4 years (2023 rate)
-
Living Stipend USD $1,120 per month for 4 years (2023 rate)
-
an international return airfare
-
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the time spent in Australia (up to USD $1,000 per year).
In addition, Curtin will provide the below top up benefits:

Top up living stipend up to the current Curtin PhD stipend rate to support students whilst studying in Australia (Curtin stipend rate is AUD $32,250 per annum in 2023)

Tuition fee offset scholarship to support any shortfall between the Project 89 tuition funding contribution of USD $25,000 per annum for 4 years.
Note: Students may spend time offshore, however Curtin will only fund the top up living stipend while students are onshore. Students
travelling to Australia with their families may be eligible to apply for the additional cost of family OSHC when they arrive onshore.

To be eligible to apply you must:
1. Be a citizen or permanent resident of Vietnam at the time of your application
2. Meet Curtin's PhD eligibility requirements.
3. Meet Curtin's English language proficiency requirements

How to apply
Application process
Step 1:
Applicants must find a suitable supervisor who agree to supervise them in their areas of research via the Expression of interest form. You can search for a supervisor here. Please ensure that you indicate that you are applying for the ‘Curtin University-Vietnam Government PhD Scholarship (Project 89)’ in your Expression of Interest (EOI).
Step 2:
Once you received your invitation to apply from a suitable supervisor, submit your application for admission. The admission process may take 4 to 6 weeks. Applicants will be assessed in accordance with Curtin University international sanctions compliance, controlled goods and technologies compliance, and foreign interference governance requirements
Step 3:
Register your interest with your Vietnamese institution.
Step 4:
Once you have an offer of admission for a PhD course at Curtin, you can request a formal letter of scholarship offer verifying your conditional tuition scholarship and top up stipend support from Curtin. To request a formal letter, email the Graduate Research school via: HDRSCH-applications@curtin.edu.au Use subject line: Request formal letter for Curtin University-Vietnam Government PhD Scholarship (Project 89) application STUDENT ID NUMBER: xx.
Please attach a copy of your Curtin admission offer letter to expedite this process.
Step 5:
If successful, you need to provide your confirmation of Curtin University-Vietnam Government PhD Scholarship (Project 89) scholarship offer to your Curtin supervisor who will attach it to a HDR Scholarship Nomination form and submit it to the Graduate
Research School for review and confirmation of the Curtin top up Scholarship.
